LJESKA Math Club

Mission Statement

The LJES Khan Academy Math Club aims to provide a supportive and exciting environment for serious math students in grades 3rd to 5th and help raise their appreciation for the diversity of mathematical applications.

What is the Khan Academy?

Khan Academy is a free website with major funding from Google and the Gate Foundation centered around mathematics and science that provides custom self-paced learning tools, a dynamic system for getting help and a custom profile that tracks student's points and badges to measure progress. Coaches, parents and teachers have visibility into what their students are learning on the Khan Academy.

Please explore the website at www.khanacademy.org.

When and where will the LJESKA Club meet?

The Club will meet at 8 am on Wednesdays in Ms. Woods classroom, Room 14. The first meeting date is January 30, 2013.

What are the requirements to join the LJESKA Club?

The LJESKA Club is open to all serious math 3rd-5th grade students enrolled at LJES. Members will need a signed permission slip and a gmail account with a username and password. Members need to agree to allow the LJESKA Club administrator as a coach in their profile so we can tally the energy points of the club. Every member's parent must also agree to sign on as a coach of his/her child. When a student leaves the club, that member can delete LJESKA admin coach from their profile at any time. The Club is free but members need to commit to come every Wednesday morning at 8 am. Initial membership is limited to the first 30 applicants due to the available iPads in Room 14.

How will the meetings run?

We will start the meetings by celebrating badges that the kids have earned and present our club energy point total. Kids will then log into their profiles and spend 30-40 minutes on their custom program. On occasion, the LJESKA Club will watch a Vi Hart video on the KA website and we will do a project based on the math concept that she demonstrated in her piece.

If our club hits a million energy points by June, we will have a pizza party!

Who is running the LJESKA Club?

The Club will have one parent administrator, parent volunteers and teachers from LJES. Students that have over 150,000 energy points will be promoted to "peer" helpers and can help other students during the meetings.

What are the requirements to log into Khan Academy?

Student will need a Gmail account (Google email) with a username and password. If your child does not have his or her own Gmail account, the recommended method for providing your child with an account is to use your existing Gmail account and create a sub account for your child's use.

Directions are outlined at: http://www.khanacademy.org/createchild

Child accounts have several safety features:

  • The parent who creates the child account becomes the child’s permanent

    coach.

  • The child cannot enter certain information (e.g.. email, full name) in their

profile, nor make their profile public.

  • The parent has the option of disabling the child from adding other people

    as coaches.

  • The parent manages the child’s password and can change it at any time

    for any reason.

  • The child cannot post public messages in discussion forums on the KA

    website.
