Welcome to Room 13!     


My name is Irene Akiyama.  I would like to welcome the new third graders and their families.  I look forward to seeing everyone on the first day of school and at the Third Grade Open House on September 16, 2009.

School Supplies
Parents, please do not follow the third grade list that is listed on the website.  I have so many unused supplies from previous years and no place to store additional.  Many of the school supplies we use are stored in a communal spot to be used by anyone.  This not only reduces extra clutter in their desks but fosters the community spirit.

Please do not send these items (at least, yet...):
  • Space Savers
  • binder paper
  • boxes of pencils
  • colored pencils
  • glue
  • glue sticks
  • eraser caps or eraser bars
  • personal desk pencil sharpeners

What each child will need:
  • 4 hardcover marbled composition books (any color or design)
  • 1 pair pointed scissors
  • 1-2 highlighters (please keep extras at home)
  • 1 pkg. plastic binder dividers with pockets, 8-subject
  • 1 ruler with both metric and standard measurement markings
  • 1 translucent protractor
  • 1 Ziploc bag with 6 quarters, 8 dimes, 8 nickels, and 30 pennies (this will go home at the end of the year)
  • 1 Color Oxford Pocket Dictionary Thesaurus ISBN-10: 0199226911( I will be glad to order these from Amazon for the class for $10.15 each.  Regular price is $11.95 + tax.)
  • 3 rolls Scotch Permanent Double Stick Tape (yellow package)
  • 1 package Post-It Durable Tabs, 66 count, 1"x1 1/2", 3 colors
  • 3 presentation binders (2) 1" and (1) 1/2" I prefer when the kids all have the same binder.  I will buy some of the packages of 6 at Costco.  They are good quality, not bulky like some, and economical when purchasing in sets, averaging $2 each.  If you'd like to bring your own instead of getting them from me, feel free, especially if your child already has their heart set on using a particular one.
It would be great if they could have their composition books, the binders or money to buy the binders, and dividers with pockets on the first day of school, but not imperative.  The remainder of the items can be brought in anytime during the first week or two.

New Third Grade News

This year the third graders will be having recess in the afternoon instead of the morning.  Lunch is tentatively scheduled for 11:30.  This makes for a long afternoon.  Please send plenty of healthy snacks and fluids with sport bottle lids for the kids to eat and drink throughout the day in class.  Transitioning to a scheduled snack/meal time  after a summer of free eating is difficult for most.  

Please enjoy the remaining summer.  I hope the kids are relaxed and looking forward to a fun new year.
