Curriculum News -

SPELLING
Students will use a  phonics based program. There will be 8 words weekly. We will also have a vocabulary extension piece for selected students who demonstrate an apptitude for good spelling and need further enrichment of advanced vocabulary. 

Reading Seminar

We are now in fiction genre and have started book clubs.  Students must read the designated text each night and make comments in their response books ready to discuss in book clubs..

Reading Workshop
Story archs and finding the theme - big idea - in rich literature. We also will be moving into step 2 which is "Does my character have character?"
  
Social Studies.  
Our unit is Native Americans

Science

 Physical  Science is next in January

Writer's Workshop

Writing a narrative that includes all of the enhancements I have taught over the unit and in word study eg. similes, rich adjectives, voracious verbs etc

We will also do a leter writing unit.  Friendly letters and persuasive letters will be included.  WE will also do thank you notes, invitiations etc.

Health
  
Unit 3 Healthy Food.  Watch out!  The children will persuade you to choose wisely at the grocery store after this unit.

 Word Study

We are using a program called Reward which focuses on syllabication and also completing spelling tests that look at phonic patterns.
