MAY NEWSLETTER
May has arrived and that means the end of the school year is approaching fast. During these last few months of school, it is very important for you to encourage your child to work up to their potential. I am always reminding the children to “show what you know.”
Literacy:
We are nearing the end of our Literacy Seminar on characters and the big idea. Our next Seminar in Critical Literacy is a non-fiction unit called “Discovery by Design.” It revolves around investigating a central idea or question using multiple resources. We will be conducting research in class, using books, magazines, Internet, etc.
Writer’s Workshop:
We have been exploring the world of poetry. Our study of poetry has taught the children to explore and enjoy language, voice, repetition, sounds, and the rhythm of words. Later in the month we will be writing reports on sea creatures to go with our MARE unit, which begins in the middle of the month.
Math:
Unit 9 in Everyday Mathematics reinforces counting, adding, and subtracting with 10s and 1s, place-value, counting on a number grid, and equivalent fractions.
Social Studies:
Our new social studies unit called “Our Place in the World” revolves around geography and maps. We will be learning how to use a map to locate our community, CA, USA, the continents, and the major oceans.
Science:
We are exploring plants, and what they need to survive.
Health:
We will spend some time talking about healthy eating, good exercise habits, and being safe at home and at school.
MARE (Marine Activities, Resources, and Education)
The school wide MARE program will begin in the middle of the month. Our focus for first grade is the ‘Rocky Seashore.’ We have a lot of fun activities and projects planned for this unit. We will be going on a field trip to Sea World on Tuesday, June 8th. We will need parent driver’s/chaperones to make this field trip possible, so mark your calendars.
