* Melissa Roy Wood * Teacher Bio *

This is my eighth year of teaching in the San Diego Unified School District. I have taught three years of fourth grade and the past five years in fifth grade. I taught for four years at Sequoia Elementary School in Clairemont and this is now my fourth year at LJES.

I am originally from Los Angeles, California. When I was 8, my family moved to La Jolla and I attended LJES in fourth and fifth grade. In fact, I was in fifth grade in Room 14 just like your son or daughter! In 2000, I graduated from LJHS and in 2003 graduated from SDSU with a Bachelors of Art in Education and a History minor. In 2004, I began my first full time assignment at Sequoia Elementary and in 2007, received my Masters Degree in Education with an emphasis in K-12 Literacy. I currently hold a CLAD Credential, math specialist and GATE certificate. Learning and working with children is a great passion of mine. I am looking forward to getting to know both you and your children, this year.

Two of my passions are education and family. I believe that strong educators make a huge impact on not just the learning, but the lives of the students they reach. I am constantly looking for ways to improve my teaching craft to be the best teacher I can—I love my job. I enjoy being a part of the community in which I work, getting to know the families of my students and being a part of their lives.

My favorite subjects to teach are writing and science. One of my favorite children’s authors, Ralph Fletcher, wrote an entire book on “living the writing kind of life” and how different one sees the world as a writer. As an elementary educator, I am passionate about providing my students with the opportunity to see the world around them as a scientist, historian, mathematician, artist and member of the community with a voice. My passion is “living a teaching kind of life”. In order to be the best teacher I could be, I have so much support from my family: my father, grandmother, brother and husband. My husband, Steven, and I enjoy baseball, reading, going to the movies, being San Diego tourists and having a much fun as possible. My father, Gregory, has set an example of how to live a teaching kind of life and inspired me to become a teacher. My grandmother, Betty who raised me with my dad is a mother to me, and my brother Charles shares my love for music and all things that make us laugh.
