Tending to the garden of students’ hopes and dreams while inspiring community pride.

Discussion between three La Jolla Elementary School moms over a cup of coffee led to the development of Bloom, a privately-funded site improvement committee committed to designing, implementing and maintaining mind-inspiring hardscape and landscape throughout the elementary school’s campus. The three have since been joined by nine additional board members, including parents, teachers and Principal Donna Tripi.

The improvements the group implements are meant to inspire the children as well as improve the perception of La Jolla Elementary School in the community. Phase One included The Kindergarten Terrace, which creates a wonderful new green lawn/outdoor classroom for the kindergarten and provides an area for parents and siblings to gather during pick-up and drop-off. Phase two featured a welcoming plaza on the Girard Avenue side of campus and the creation of the Legacy Walkway, a safe and scenic path connecting the two facades of LJES from Girard Avenue to Marine Street along the school’s edge. Finally, a courtyard at the front of the school on Marine Street is in the works and construction is slated to begin over the summer of 2009.

Fundraising for Bloom, through individual donations and its first fundraiser, La Jolla Rocks, is done in conjunction with friends of La Jolla Elementary, an existing 501(c)(3) corporation. Private donations are welcome and can be made through the school’s office or by visiting the Bloom website, www.ljesbloom.com. Several donor opportunities are available, from artistic etching of donors’ names along the Legacy Walkway, to sponsorship of several architectural and landscape design elements.
